Art took centre stage at The Royal Suite, Waldorf Astoria Palm Jumeirah on March 2, when the Chief Guest, His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development released the famous artist Sujata Bajaj’s magnificent book Ganapati. It is a 30-year odyssey in rare talent and the event which was by invitation convincingly underscored the UAE’s commitment to multi-cultural diversity and the encouragement to the world’s finest talent.
Over 200 guests shared the exceptional ambience of the evening and were able to interact with dignitaries from the UAE and abroad.
Speaking on the occasion His Highness welcomed Sujata Bajaj to the UAE and said, “Sujata Bajaj’s endless imagination conjures the shared hopes and dreams through the use of gorgeous colours, arresting lines, and compelling shapes. Turning the pages in her breathtakingly beautiful book Ganapati, I am especially captivated by her choice of vibrant colours that freely and joyfully give life to her creations. It is as though she is revealing herself—her intellect, her imagination, her values … Welcome, Sujata Bajaj, to the United Arab Emirates. We know your culture well because it has become a part of our global culture. The talent and virtue of India have been invaluable in the development of our country”.
Also present on the occasion were Guests of Honour, His Excellency Navdeep Suri, Ambassador of India to the UAE and well-known actress and cultural icon Shabana Azmi.
Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Navdeep Suri, Guest of Honour for the evening said “The launch of Sujata Bajaj’s marvelous rendition of Ganapati is a tribute to both the artist and to the emergence of UAE as a real hub of art and culture.” Ambassador Suri added, “Relations between India and the UAE have entered a golden period following the historic visit of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed as the Chief Guest on India’s Republic Day. Events like these add an important cultural dimension to this special relationship.”
Shabana Azmi, a recognized patron of the arts praised the effort by saying,” I have know Sujata for 30 odd years and watched with delight her growth on the canvas literally and metaphorically! She has a strong independent signature deeply rooted in Indian culture but with the flourish of an International vision. I am proud to be present in support on her Dubai Book Launch.”
Sujata, an abstract colorist, who lives between Paris, India and Dubai had also placed on display specially flown in canvases that mark her creative journey both in terms of the theme for the evening and some of her more compelling abstracts for which she first came into the public eye. Sujata’s sculptures, of which two were on display are inspired by what she calls ‘visions’ of rich colour and shape and produce and impact dramatically on the viewer, both professional and the lover of art.
Reacting to the response to her event Sujata said, “I am proud to be in the UAE and humbled by the sense of togetherness I see around me and the manner in which the fine arts are encouraged in the country,’ she said. “ This has been a truly inspiring exercise with several friends and well wishers doing their utmost to make the evening a success. I hope we have more such events from around the world and use art for the healing qualities it possesses.”
